At the age of 91, Pearl Pittman Avery finished her race on September 27, 2017. She was at her home on Rock House Road with her family gathered by her side.

Pearl began her race in Tigerville, SC, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Mamie Bryant Pittman. She was first married to Pete Owens and they had five sons. They moved to Clinton, SC, where she raised her boys, along with their friends, and accomplished this mostly on her own due to the death of Pete at an early age.

After her sons were grown, their stepfather, Joe Avery, came into her life for the next 41 years. After retirement, they moved to 1527 Rock House Road, Greenwood, SC where she resided until she went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ.

Pearl was the oldest living member of Redemption Baptist Church of Laurens, SC.

Surviving are three sons, David Owens (Janice) of Laurens, Carroll Owens (Doris) of Hickory Tavern and Gene Owens (Vickie) of Greenwood; a brother, Floyd Pittman (Sarah) of Clinton; a grandson raised in the home, Stevie Owens (Nancy) of Greenwood; her caretakers, grandson Jamie Owens and his wife, Pam, of Greenwood; and a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands and two sons, Doug Owens and Dale Owens.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Byars officiating. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Clinton, SC.

Pallbearers will be Bob Taylor, Terry Taylor, Woody Owensby, Mike Waters, Steve Cann and Brad Bell.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Family members are at their respective homes.

Because Pearl loved flowers, her family wishes for gifts of flowers to honor her instead of memorial contributions.
