William A. Klauber, Jr., M.D.

William Adolph Klauber, Jr., M.D. died Monday, March 3, 2014. Born in Bamberg, SC on February 21, 1918, he was the son of William Adolph and Merchie Judy Klauber of St. George, SC. He spent his boyhood days in St. George, where he was educated in the public schools. He attended Furman University, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in 1939 and attained his M.D. degree from The Medical University of SC. During World War II, he served as a Full Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the US Navy. Following the war, he studied further at The University of Rochester, NY, first as a Resident Physician in Internal Medicine, followed by training in Radiology in Rochester and as a Resident in Radiology at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Upon completion of his training, he progressed to an Instructorship in Radiology. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Klauber was a member of The American College of Radiology and was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1967. Following his training in Radiology, he spent a period as Instructor of Radiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. In 1992, he was chosen as one of the 100 distinguished alumni of The Medical University of South Carolina since 1982. In 1951, Dr. Klauber came to Greenwood as the first Radiologist at Self Memorial Hospital, where he was later elected Chief of Staff. During his career as Radiologist in Greenwood, he also served on the staff of Brewer Hospital. This institution was rejuvenated after a study of health needs in Greenwood done through the Greenwood Rotary Club with assistance from The Self Foundation. Along with his associates, Dr. Klauber founded the Brewer Hospital School of Radiography, one of the two schools of this type dedicated to the training of African American Radiographic Technologists in the US. Dr. Klauber retired from the practice of Radiology in 1992. In 1993, he was appointed by Governor Carroll Campbell to represent South Carolina on the Education Commission for the States. In 2006, he was honored as the 39th inductee into the Greenwood County Hall of Fame, being recognized for bringing radiological sciences to the Greenwood area and for being a "respected, courageous, and visionary community leader." Dr. Klauber was instrumental in advancing the mission of Piedmont Technical College, where he served on the college commission from 1982 to 2002. He established the Klauber Scholarship for Radiologic Technology at PTC and was responsible for the first certified radiologic technical education program at Self Memorial Hospital. Dr. Klauber was a Rotarian and served as President of the Greenwood Rotary Club. He was a Founding Fellow of The Greenwood Genetic Center, where he served several terms on the Board of Directors, as well as the Board of The James C. Self Genetic Research Center. The Genetic Center's Klauber Lecture Series was named in his honor, as was the Library at the South Carolina Biotechnology Center. He was a founding board member and member of the Building Committee of the Greenwood Methodist Home (now Wesley Commons) and subsequently served a period as Chairman of the Board. He served several terms on The Board of Trustees of Cambridge Academy and served on the staff committee of Self Memorial Hospital, which resulted in the establishment of the Family Practice Residency (now the Montgomery Center for Family Medicine) at the hospital. Dr. Klauber was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Greenwood, having served as a trustee and a member of the Board of Stewards. Dr. Klauber was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jane Onley Klauber of Washington, DC and by a son, Richard Louis Klauber. He is survived by his wife, Peggy McQuown Klauber of Greenwood; four sons, William A. Klauber, III of Ninety Six, SC, Dr. Thomas Onley Klauber and his wife, Beth, of Marion, SC, John Baynard Klauber and his wife, Stephanie, of Marietta, GA and Dr. James Shuler Klauber, Sr. and his wife, Teresa, of Utica, KY; daughter-in-law, Julia Klauber of Duluth, MN; eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren and Peggy's eight children from her first marriage.
