James H. "Hack" Bartley, 66, of Hodges, husband of Libby Bartley, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016.
Born in Ridge Spring, he was the son of the late Elzie and Elizabeth Jennings Bartley. A graduate of Greenwood High School and Lander University, Hack worked locally with Greenwood Mills, after which he pursued a career in sales with National Starch Corporation and later with HarperLove Adhesives. He eventually established and ran his own industrial sales rep and consulting business, Bartley & Associates, until his retirement.
Hack also had a lifelong career as a musician/entertainer including his time beginning in 1967 with The Swingin' Medallions followed by many other musical endeavors, including his Saxy Thing Records and Bartley Publishing companies, winning three Cammy awards from the Carolina Beach Music Association for original recordings. Hack reveled in a warm and personal relationship with his audiences over the years and he cherished the friendships of the myriad of talented musicians and musical technicians with whom he was fortunate enough to perform during his 50+ year musical career. After his retirement he was active with, among many other enterprises, Greenwood's Live After Five in its beginning years. He operated the cattle and haying operation at his family farm. He worked with Custom Audio & Lighting and OverOrange Trucking, Inc. as another sideline in the past few years. He was quite proud that his alma mater, Lander University, asked him to teach two Continuing Ed courses – one in "Playing the Harmonica" and one on "The Fundamentals of Fly Fishing." He was an outdoorsman, lover of fishing, camping, and hunting. And he was a real "cowboy who loved horses, cowboy boots and hats, kids, the smell of hay, old trucks and big tractors," to quote a family friend.
First and foremost, Hack was a devoted family man. A devout Christian, he was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and also a member of The Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are his wife of the home; three children, Carrie Kinard and her husband, Andrew, Anna Wideman and her husband, Tony, all of Greenwood, and Jake Bartley and his wife, Lainee, of Hodges; seventeen grandchildren, Daniel and Delia Kinard, Ellie Wideman Austin and her husband, Jordan, Jackson, Catherine, Sam, Rome, Marianne, Clare, Alexandra and Beau Wideman, all of Greenwood, Gideon, Ben, Asher, Zeke, Eli and Malachi Bartley of Hodges; a brother, Dr. John Bartley of Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Judie Bartley Crooks and her husband, Joe, and Karen Bartley Rollison and her husband, Larry, all of Greenwood.
