Ada Mae Broome Harter, 87, died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Savannah Heights Living Center in McCormick. Mrs. Harter, affectionately known as �Nanny� to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, made her home for the last nine years at 106 Cumberland Court in Ninety Six. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Preston Harter. Mrs. Harter was born on March 20, 1922, in Kathwood, SC; she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Myrtis Spires Broome. She lived through �The Great Depression� and saw 14 presidents live in the White House. She moved to the Epworth area of Greenwood County in 1945 where she raised her family. For eight years, Mrs. Harter drove a school bus for the Greenwood County School System and worked as a nursing assistant at Self Memorial Hospital. She retired from Monsanto in 1968 and was a faithful poll worker for the county of Greenwood for many years. In 1995 she was awarded the Greatest Grandmother award for the state of SC. During the last decade, she traveled the United States portraying the part of �TECHR� in the JOHNATHON skit. Mrs. Harter served as treasurer of Kinard United Methodist Church for many years, where she was the oldest surviving member. In many homes of family and friends you will find afghans that she has enjoyed creating over the past 30 years. Surviving are three children; James Preston Harter, Jr. and his wife, Wilma, from State Road, NC; Linda H. McCaslin and her husband, George, of North Augusta, SC; and Jo Ann H. Burroughs and her husband, Denny, of Ninety Six; nine grandchildren; Christopher B. Harter of Greenwood, Patrick K. McCaslin and his wife, Sherri, from North Augusta, Michelle M. Foster and her husband, Lt. Col Joe Foster, from Maryland, Allyson M. Davis and her husband Shannon, from Modoc, SC, Maj. Jeffery Todd Burroughs and his wife Svetlana, from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Tara B. Harris and her husband Travis, from Ninety Six, Leah N. McCaslin from Augusta,GA, Beth Laskey and her husband Rod, from Charlotte, NC and Bonni Gillette from State Road, NC; fifteen great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; a sister Betty McDonald from Barnwell, SC; and a brother Calvin G. Broome from North Augusta. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons�-in-law; Chris Harter, Patrick McCaslin, Todd Burroughs, Joe Foster, Shannon Davis and Travis Harris. All great grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Kinard United Methodist Church, 104 Lebanon Church Road Greenwood, SC 29646.
