Alfred "Al" Langley White, Jr., 82, beloved husband of Linda J. White, passed away on July 17, 2026, surrounded by family in Greenwood, SC.

Born on May 28, 1944 in Augusta, GA, he was a son of the late Alfred Langley White, Sr. and Mary Sue White. He grew up in Troy, SC and was a proud Trojan of the Troy baseball team. As a youth, he helped plan and lay out the Troy baseball field which is maintained to this day.

Al was a 1962 graduate of Greenwood High School where he excelled in academics and football. He continued his education at Clemson University, serving as president of the Clemson Chemistry Club and earning his Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1966. While attending graduate school at Emory University, he married his sweetheart Linda, and then he served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the US Navy. He graduated from Officer Candidates School in 1967. His service took him to Sandia Base in Albuquerque, NM where he primarily researched but also taught nuclear and radiological technology.

After his active service ended, he continued to serve his country in the US Naval Reserves, retiring after 20 years as a Commander. He was a member of Post 20 American Legion. In addition to his military service, he went on to successfully work as a chemist in the textile industry and was employed by Mt. Vernon Mills for many years with his career culminating in his role of plant manager in Ware Shoals, SC. He continued applying his love of science by serving as a consultant until his recent illness.

He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them making wonderful memories together which included many camping trips and was an avid fan of sports particularly the Clemson Tigers and Atlanta Braves. He was known for his inventive spirit and broad knowledge of various subjects, while always remaining humble about his achievements. He was a member of Laurel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, an usher, and chaired several committees. A man of exceptional intellect, Al was known for his love of reading and his insatiable curiosity. However, what defined him most was his servant's heart. Above all, he loved the Lord and his family and was so very proud of his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Al is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda Jordan White; son, Alfred Langley White, III (Stacy); two daughters, Amy Craig (Richard) and Allison "Alley" White; sisters, Susie Darby (Don), and Nancy Smith (Clem); brothers, Frankie White (Kathy), Bill White (Melissa) and Donnie White (Kippie); grandsons, Blake White (Heather), Brandt White (Lauren), Cameron Craig; granddaughter, Charlotte Craig; great-grandchildren, Nevaeh White, Aeris Urbanik and Easton White; brother-in-law Robert Timmerman (Cach); special cousin, Johnny Furqueron; many nieces and nephews including his God children Timberly Williams, Patty Finley, Jennifer Murray, Michele Covington, and Michael White; and his faithful dog Willow.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Mike White; niece, Heather Smith; grand-nephew Ladson Corley and his wife's parents, Raymond and Mary Jordan.

A funeral service will be officiated by pastor and friend James Rodgers at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Laurel Baptist Church, Greenwood, SC.

Pallbearers will be Cameron Craig, Phillip Darby, Ben Smith, Chris Smith, Stone Strickland, Andrew White, Blake White, Brandt White and Michael White.

 Honorary pallbearers are the men of Laurel Baptist Church and American Legion Post 20.

The family will receive friends before the service in the church sanctuary from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.

Burial, with military rites, will immediately follow in Troy Cemetery, Troy, SC.
