Alvin Dixie "Dickie" Cathcart, 75, husband of Deborah Jean Putnam Cathcart, the love of his life for 55 years of marriage, died January 5, 2026, the day before his birthday.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late JD Cathcart and Marion Bowman Cathcart Medlock. He proudly served in the United States Navy (Seabees 40) and most of his tour was served at Camp David, President's Retreat, where he felt honored to serve his country. After the military, he was employed with Benjamin Heating and Air Company, then went on to work in maintenance at Westinghouse, now Eaton Corporation. After his retirement, he opened a sheet metal shop at home (commercial and industrial) and had an opportunity to work with Lamar Davenport on cell towers. To his surprise, another opportunity opened for him to begin teaching at Piedmont Technical College in the HVAC department as an instructor for beginner's sheet metal. Six years earlier, he had received a certificate in this field at PTC. He was excited to teach and loved his students. It made him feel useful. After six years, he retired from teaching.
Then God opened another door for him to continue teaching at the Conference, a Pentecostal Holiness Church's training course for future Royal Ranger Leaders, during the Wednesday night's Boys Program. He was assigned to the teenager's group at South Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church, which he could relate to because his son Chad and Jason McCary were in this group. When his son aged out of the group, he began attending Augusta Highway Baptist Church where he became a member and served as an usher and trustee. He was also a member of the Men's Fellowship. He believed it was an honor and a privilege to serve his Lord and Savior.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Darrell Shewbert; and sisters, Donna Sue "Penny" Shewbert and Candy Lynn Medlock Wells.
Alvin is survived by his wife; son, Chad Dixie Cathcart; daughter in law, Sheila Kay Ferrer Cathcart; granddaughter, Carmen Faith Cathcart; grandson, Ethan Harold Cathcart; and sister, Cookie Medlock.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of the following organizations: Augusta Highway Baptist Church, 3716 Hwy 25 South, Greenwood, SC 29646; Agape Care Hospice, 326 Montague Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649; or the Brain Injury Association of SC, 4400 St. Andrews Rd, Unit E, Columbia, SC 29210.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation for all the visits, phone calls, text messages and PRAYERS, which were a "Godsend" during this most difficult time. And that "If anyone does not know our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, you are welcome to attend our church or another church of your choosing. Don't delay. This is the most important question you should ask in your lifetime: Where will you spend eternity? Heaven or Hell? We are praying that you will choose heaven and may God bless everyone."
