Barbara Eloise Manzer Darrow passed from this life into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on June 12, 2018. Upon her death, her body was transferred to the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA, for scientific study and the training of new physicians and other medical professionals.
A resident of 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, SC, Barbara was born in Johnson City, NY, on December 10, 1923, the only child of the late J. Lynn and Eloise Madge Roney Manzer. In 1941, she married the late Duane Almon Darrow, of Binghamton, NY. They were married for 53 years. She was also predeceased by a granddaughter-in-law, Mary Kathrine Henderson Constant.
Barbara was a gifted musician who, from her earliest days, used her talent to glorify God. She played the piano or organ in every church she ever attended, until moving to Greenwood. She shared her talent by accompanying church and school musicians. At the age of 16, she accompanied a fellow student in a competition at the 1939 New York World's Fair. In later years, she accompanied high school band students in competitions and chaperoned them on various trips. She was known to "her" band kids as "Momma D". For many years, she shared her love of piano and music by teaching numerous young people to play the piano.
In 1943, Barbara joined Duane in the ministry of The Gideons International, becoming a member of the Gideons Auxiliary. She maintained that membership for 75 years, until her death. Especially in retirement, she traveled with Duane in the Gideon ministry. Through the Auxiliary, she participated with other members in placing New Testaments in the hands of nurses and other medical professionals. She also served her Lord in other ways. With Child Evangelism Fellowship for many years, she went into elementary schools weekly, presenting stories from the Bible. She and Duane often opened their homes to missionaries, Gideons, and traveling choir members, as well as Young Life Club for several years. Together, they were founders and charter members of First Alliance Church and founders and co-owners of the Augusta Christian Bookstore, both in Augusta, GA.
After moving from North Augusta, SC, to Wesley Commons, Greenwood, SC, in 1999, she became a regular piano accompanist for Vespers, Chapel, vocal programs, instrumental concerts, etc. She was one of the founders of the Wild Turkey Kitchen Band at Wesley Commons, and served as its accompanist until macular degeneration stilled her hands at the keyboard. But even then, she continued to play an "instrument" in the Kitchen Band until a few weeks before her death.
Barbara is survived by a large extended family: daughter, Kathleen D. Constant (Eric), Greenwood, SC; and sons, the Reverend Eric L. Darrow, Sr. (Patricia), Savannah, GA, and Carlton E. Jenkins (Mary), North Augusta, SC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Eric L. Constant, Jr. (Brandi), Chewelah, WA; Jeffrey A. Constant (Peggy Gorham-Cromer), Greenwood, SC; Eric L. Darrow, Jr. (Katie), Pooler, GA; Christopher D. Constant (Bethanie), Richmond, VA; Donna G. Darrow, Richmond Hill, GA; Heather A. The memorial service will be June 21, 2018 at 3:00 p.m., in the Wesley Commons Chapel, 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, SC. The family will greet friends at the conclusion of the service.
