Obituary

Beatrice E. Stroad Harris Martin, 93 of Ware Shoals Manor, 10 North Greenwood Street, formerly of Greenwood, SC, widow of Russell M. Martin, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Self Regional Medical Center. Born in Sardinia, Ohio on May 7, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Mabel Brown Stroad. Beatrice graduated from Buford High School in 1936 and also graduated from the Miami-Douglas School of Business in Dayton Ohio. She worked for William S. Moore�s Store, Inc for 34 years where she was the first female manager in the state of Ohio. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 13 in Sardinia, OH from where she received her fifty year pin. She was first a member of Hollowtown Church of Christ in Ohio where she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of First Presbyterian Church of Naples, FL where she served as a Deaconess and also a mid-week Bible study teacher and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Greenwood. In her younger years, she was an avid bowler and received a state championship with her Women�s League. She enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with her grandchildren and special nieces and other family members. Beatrice was a wonderful carpenter and after retirement she was a world traveler with Russell. Her greatest experiences were her two mission trips to the Holy land. She was twice married, first to the late Hugh Denver Harris and was preceded in death by her only child, daughter, Karen L. Harris Hilliard; four brothers, Beverly (Betty) Stroad, Kenneth (Harriet) Stroad, Charles Steven Stroad and Malcolm Daryl Stroad; and two grandsons, Brian and Patrick Hilliard. Surviving are three grandchildren, Anita (Ray) Graham, Kenneth (Vickie) Hilliard, Jr., both of Greenwood and Alisa (Ricky) Smith of Ninety Six; three sister-in-laws, Arlene Stroad of Winchester, IN, Alice Stroad of Bristol, VA and Mary Cornetet of Buford, OH; eleven great grandchildren; twenty-four great- great grandchildren; a step son, Lonnie (Shirley)Martin; three step-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; a former son-in law, Kenneth R. (Bonnie)Hilliard, Sr. of Greenwood; many nieces and nephews; and many friends. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons. Honorary escort will be the staff of Ware Shoals Manor, Verona �Lee� Raines, Dr. David Bridges, Dr. Thomas Pritchard and the Dr.�s of the Montgomery Center. The family has requested that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the Child Evangelism Fellowship, PO Box 50652, Greenwood, SC 29649. The family is at their respective homes.
