Ben "Benny" Terrel Carter, 71, of 105 Appian Way, husband of Sandra Miller Carter, died from an extended illness of Parkinson Dementia on Monday, December 19, 2016 at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in Jesup, GA, he was a son of the late Clyde Leroy and Evelyn Carter Bateman. He was an avid sportsman who on any given day could be found in the woods hunting or on the lake fishing. He also had a love for college football and drag racing. Benny was an outstanding athlete at Greenwood High School where he played football under Pinky Babb from 1963-1966 and was named The Most Valuable Back in 1964. He also ran track and played basketball. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He worked for CPW for ten years and from 1980 until 2007 owned and operated Ace Tree Services. Benny attended Trinity Baptist Tabernacle.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are his children, Teresa Barton (Mike), Vickie Rhodes (Stacy), Michelle Taylor (Barry), and Amy Carter Ronk, all of Greenwood; eight grandchildren, Corey Barton (Alycia), Andrew Barton, Carter Rhodes, Caroline Rhodes, Kristen Hinton, Joey Hinton, Austin Carter, and Brycen Ronk; two great grandchildren, Darlene Hinton and Wyatt Barton; and a brother, Ronnie Bateman (Thelma) of Greenwood.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; two sisters, Cora Natalie Carter and Sue Bateman and a brother, Clyde Carter.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Ouzts officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and a nephew, Bryan Varner.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
