Betty Jean Umstead Lewis, 76, of 938 Marshall Street, widow of Charles Lewis, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Hospice Care of the Piedmont. Born in Johnston County, NC, she was the daughter of Annie Ruth Suggs Umstead and the late Ralph Brogden Umstead. Betty was a U. S. Army Veteran and retired from banking. She worked at Wal-Mart where she made many new friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Umstead. Surviving is her mother of VA; a son, Mark Lewis of Greenwood; a brother, Wayne Umstead (Cathy) of VA; three nieces, Jessie Umstead of VA, Linda Ritchie (Michael) and Barbara Sox (Marion) both of West Columbia; a nephew, Robert Spires (Kathryn) of West Columbia; honorary grandchildren, Courtney, Jason, Hope, Melody and Grace Holloway; and her faithful dog, Charlie the Thief.
