Born in Lee County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Clyde William Tankersley and Lula Virginia Martin Tankersley. Billy Joe led a life marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Belinda, as well as his brother, Clyde Tankersley, Jr. He also leaves behind three children, Debra Joe Franks (Bill), Laura Merchant and Billy Tankersley (Alex); two stepchildren, Andrew "Scotty" Scott (Melinda) and Amanda "Mandy" Hitt (Fletcher); twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was a loving and supportive father and stepfather, cherished by all of his children.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Tankersley and his sister, Pauline Crisp.
