Obituary

Robert "Bob" Lewis Johnson, Jr., 71, of Greenwood, widow of Valerie Nixon Johnson, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at his home.

Born on September 27, 1952, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Bob was a son of the late Robert Lewis Johnson, Sr. and Francis McDowell Johnson. He was raised in a close-knit family that instilled in him the values of hard work, dedication, and integrity. Bob's passion for learning led him to pursue his education, and he obtained an Associate's Degree from Lake City College (now Florida Gateway College), which served as a solid foundation for the successful journey that lay ahead.

Bob began his career as a Golf Course Superintendent in Spartanburg, but retired after 28 years from Hickory Knob State Park. While working at the golf course, he also enjoyed a side hustle with Spartanburg and McCormick law enforcements. After retirement he dedicated his life to the golf industry. As the Owner and Superintendent of Par 3 West Golf Course in Greenwood, he embodied the spirit of the game and worked tirelessly to ensure its growth and enjoyment for all. Known for his expertise, he was hailed as a pioneer, being the first Golf Course Superintendent for the state of South Carolina. His exceptional knowledge and skills earned him a lifetime membership at the McCormick Masonic Lodge #117, where he proudly served as a Master Mason.

Apart from his love for golf, Bob had a passion for music. He strummed his guitar with joy, creating melodies that evoked the warmth of memories and were occasionally inappropriate. Additionally, Bob relished the exhilarating freedom that came with riding his beloved Harley Davidson, finding solace on the open road, and embracing the thrill of adventure.

Bob's commitment to his craft and love for the land led him to become a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). He was revered among his peers and affectionately called himself the "Godfather of Soil," a testament to his deep understanding and expertise in his field. His contributions to the golfing community will forever be remembered and treasured.

He is survived by his companion, Sharon "BB" Glass; children, Tonia Thomas (Jeffery) of Georgia, Heather Atkinson (Ryan) and Jamie Rachels, both of South Carolina; brother, Joseph Scott Johnson of Joanna; grandchildren, Thomas Daniel Seigler (Rebecca), Ethan Conner Rachels, Brayden Anderson Rachels, Hudson Atkinson, and Zella Atkinson; and great grandchildren, Thomas Brantley Seigler, Nixon Hadley Seigler, and Hayden David Rachels.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Faye Johnson and Thelma Louise Johnson and a son-in-law, Thomas "Bucky" Seigler.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Everyone will remember Bob for always saying "If you permit it, you promote it."
