Obituary

Robert "Bob" Arthur Stokes, 78, of Waterloo, widower of Mary Jane Fredricks Stokes, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at his home.

Born on September 5, 1947, in Spartanburg, SC, he was a son of the late late Joseph F. Stokes and Carolyn Rollins Stokes. Bob’s life was a testament to dedication, passion, and the deep joy found in family and music.

A proud US Army veteran, Bob served nearly two years in Europe during the Vietnam Era, demonstrating his commitment to his country with honor and distinction. After his military service, he pursued a career as an electrician, a profession through which he displayed his skill and work ethic.

Bob was especially known for his passion for music, a love that became a cornerstone of his family’s identity. He was immensely proud to have started four generations of guitar players, cherishing every moment spent playing music with his children, grandchildren, and grandchildren. His musical influence will surely resonate for generations to come.

He also loved good food, and many fond memories were made during visits to Lou & Perry's in Honea Path with his friends.

Bob is survived by his children, Robin Gregory (Gary), Laura Stokes, and Mark Stokes; his brothers, Gary Stokes and Joe Stokes; his grandchildren, Jonathan (Kelly), Haley, Jeremy, Jacob, Mark, and Brandon; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mary and parents, Joseph and Carolyn he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ricky Stokes and Mervin Stokes.
