Hubert Carlton "Buddy" Matthews, 90, of Greenwood, husband of Annette Argo Matthews, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2025 at his home.
Born in Greenwood, he was the son of the late Hubert Matthews and Louise Cromer Matthews. Buddy graduated from Greenwood High School in 1953, where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. He attended the University of South Carolina before joining the US Air Force.
Buddy was responsible for helping bring the first Hardee's to Greenwood through Bilbub.
He retired from his business, Montague's Restaurant in 2008 which he had established in 1985. Buddy loved getting people together whether for a game of golf or just to sit and talk. His greatest pleasure on Christmas Day was getting friends, family, and customers together to feed and gift the less fortunate, where the numbers grew to over 200.
In addition to his wife, Annette, he is survived by his sons, Carlton Lee (Chrissy) and Anthony (Teresa); daughter, Denise; stepson, Mackie McKinney (Lisa) and two grandchildren, Dylan and Hope Matthews.
He was preceded in death by a son, David and his sister, Cynthia Rush.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Audrey Jones, special friend and caretaker, and to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont for their assistance and care. A special note to the only one to make him smile at the end of his journey, Kayla Beaty, RN, his hospice nurse.
Services, with military honors, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Lethco officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends before the service from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
A reception will be held following the service at Montague's Restaurant from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
