Carolyn Mildred Wehmann, beloved wife of Emmett F. Wehmann (1916-2007), died peacefully at her home in Greer, SC at the age of 102 on February 3, 2024, surrounded by her family. The daughter of Carolyn Behlen Koch and Herman John Zachman Koch, she was born at home in Staten Island, NY on January 24, 1922. Carolyn lived with her family, including brothers, Herman and Edward, in Hudson View Gardens in Washington Heights, NYC until she married in 1951. She was admitted to Hunter High School and Hunter College, graduating in 1943 with a major in Mathematics and Statistics.
Carolyn worked as a statistician with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and was later employed by the Reader Mail Co. as a pattern and dress designer. She and Emmett moved to Darien, CT where they raised their 3 children before being transferred to Indianapolis, IN and Greenwood, SC with Neptune Measurement. In Darien, she was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader from Brownies through Seniors. In Indianapolis, she served as a Girl Scout leader for the School for the Blind. Later, she served as a 20-year volunteer for Greenwood Meals on Wheels, The Self Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Greenwood Soup Kitchen. Carolyn also served on the Chancel Committee of the First Presbyterian Church and, with her husband, was a member of the Board of Greenwood-Lander Performing Arts.
Carolyn is survived by her three children, Carolyn W. Magness of Greer, SC, Walter E. Wehmann (Mercedes) of Lafayette, LA and Douglas F. Wehmann (Thea) of Goshen, CT. Her seven grandchildren include Sage (Sheena), Andrew (Paisley) and Peter Magness, Alexander (Nikki) and Harrison Wehmann and Donald (Samantha) and Kaki Wehmann. Emma Carolyn Magness is her great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 16th at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Greer, SC, with the Rev. Fergie Horvath and the Rev. Andrew Weisner officiating. Carolyn will be interred in the family plot at noon on June 1, 2024, at Fairfield Memorial Gardens in Stamford, CT. In lieu of flowers, you may choose to contribute to her favorite charity, The Wounded Warrior Project.
