Carroll Hampden Brooks, of 526 Grace Street, widower of Anita Brown Brooks, departed this life on Tuesday, December 19, 2017.
Born on January 27, 1922 at Roseland in the Cambridge Section of Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Edward Loudon Brooks, Sr. and Myrtle Fellers Brooks. He attended Greenwood schools and, after his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Army Air Force, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge, he attended The Citadel and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS degree in Accounting. Mr. Brooks was employed by the SC Tax Commission for 30 years, first as an auditor, then went on to be field audit supervisor, assistant director and director of the Income Tax Division. He was Vice President of the Southeastern Tax Administration.
Upon retirement, he returned to Greenwood, serving his community as Chairman of Greenwood County Council (1983-1990), Board of Directors, Vice President and President of the Greenwood Kiwanis Club, Board of Advisors of the Lander College School of Business, Board of Directors of the Upper Savannah Council of Governments, Board of Directors of Self Memorial Hospital and Board of Directors of the Self Family Foundation.
Mr. Brooks was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the American Legion Post 20, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was also a private pilot and an avid golfer.
Mr. Brooks is survived by his son, Barry Davis (Joy) of Emporia, KS; his daughter, Karen B. Biggart Whitfield (Michael) of Greenwood; four grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a brother, Emmett Fellers Brooks (Edie) and a sister, Mary Jane B. Mobley (Mims), both of Greenwood.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita; infant children, John Hampden Brooks and Anita Rae Brooks; brothers, Francis Chesley Brooks, Thomas Barry Brooks and Edward Loudon Brooks, II; a sister, Myrtle Brooks Fisher; grandson, Sean Patrick Biggart and a great granddaughter, Sean Reagan Biggart.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection with The Reverend Nicholas Beasley officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Ninety Six.
Pallbearers will be Edward Loudon Brooks, III, Edward Loudon Brooks, IV, Mims Mobley, III, Jon Newlon, John Pettigrew and Charlie Long.
Honorary escort will be members of the Golden "K" Kiwanis Club.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. in Parish House at the church.
