Charles Clyde Anderson, formerly of Texas, husband of Mary Bazzle Anderson, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2022, at Wesley Commons, Greenwood, South Carolina.
Born in 1937 in Floyd County, Texas, he was the son of the late Grover Milton Anderson and Ruby Belle Catlin Anderson.
In 1958, Charles joined the U. S. Army 82nd Airborne as a parachute rigger and combat cargo delivery specialist and completed approximately 24 jumps. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Cuban Crisis and became a loadmaster on C-133, C-123, and C-5A planes which later included two years in Vietnam. He was awarded many medals during his service. The Vietnam combat medals include Vietnam Advisory, Vietnam Defense, Vietnam Air, and Vietnam Air Defensive. He was proud of his service in Vietnam in which he worked with the 606th Air Commando Squadron assisting in all phases of their air drop missions and volunteering to fly extra missions to instruct their loadmasters. He also received the Airman's Medal, Air Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, and four Good Conduct Medals.
Following his military retirement in 1979 as a Senior Master Sergeant, he taught public school in Iowa Park, Texas for 20 years. After retiring from teaching, he enjoyed telling stories, studying genealogy, and harvesting, shelling, and gifting pecans from the trees he planted in his orchard. He attended the Henrietta Church of God in Henrietta, Texas faithfully, and upon moving to Greenwood in May 2022, attended Ninety Six Pentecostal Holiness Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Millie Whittington, two children, Sharon and David, and a sister, LaVelle McDougal.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Patricia "Tricia" Barton (Michael) of North Aurora, Illinois, and a granddaughter, Eleanor Barton.
Graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at the Beaufort National Cemetery officiated by Rev. Brian Brock.
