Herbert Winfield "Chip" French, III, 65, of Bluffton, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at his home.
Born in Pensacola, FL, he was the son of the late Herbert Winfield "Herb" French, Jr. and Phyllis Nadene Underwood French. Chip was a proud graduate of Lander College and a member of Pi Kappa Phi – Gamma Rho Alumni Chapter, showcasing his dedication to education and community. He was dedicated to his position as a duty manager with Signature Aviation HHI, where he worked for more than 10 years. He was loved by the entire staff, the clients and their pets that he cared for over the years. One of his responsibilities was to help plan and execute the annual Flights & Fancy Aeroport Gala.
His passion for culinary arts led him to earn a degree from Greenville Technical College, where he honed his skills and found joy in the artistry of ice sculptures. One of his proudest moments was when he was asked to create an ice sculpture titled "Kiss of the Dragon" for his son's fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, Iota Beta Chapter. His interests were as diverse as his talents, from his love of music and singing in the youth choir at South Main Baptist Church to his affinity for playing Martin and Gibson Les Paul guitars from the 1970s era.
As a dedicated fan of South Carolina Gamecock football, Chip's enthusiasm for tailgating was contagious, bringing joy to those around him. He enjoyed a good game of golf and was a big fan of all the Marvel movies. His unwavering support for women's health and breast cancer awareness were testaments to his generous and caring nature, evident in his participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day (30 miles) Walk in Hilton Head several years ago.
Chip was a devoted father and brother. He is survived by his son, Herbert W. "Win" French, IV and his wife, Brooke and his sister, Dr. Carol French. Chip was looking forward to becoming a grandfather to Sawyer Winfield French, who is expected in December 2024.
In addition to his parents, Chip was preceded in death by his daughter, Meredith Lauren French.
A memorial service to celebrate Chip's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on August 3 at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Wall officiating.
Following the memorial service, the family and friends will gather at Howard's on Main from 2:00-4:00 p.m. to honor Chip with some of his favorite music.
