Obituary

Clarence Harold "Mailman" Simpfenderfer, beloved father, husband and friend, left this world on January 8, 2015.

He was born in Dodge, ND on October 16, 1947 to German pioneers who came to this country in search of a new American homestead. Later the family moved to Lodi, CA to be able to experience an easier life and there Clarence graduated from Lodi Union High School. He enlisted in the US Army to be able to have the opportunity to see the world and made his career as a driving instructor and helicopter technical inspector for 23 years, where he served a tour in Germany and two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the Army as a Sargent First Class in 1977. After recovering from back surgery, he worked briefly for Davis & Floyd as a pipeline inspector, then went on to work with the US Postal Service, where he received the infamous nickname, "Mailman". Retiring from USPS after 22 years, he made his rounds all over town, where everybody knew his name! One of his favorite hobbies was metal detecting, or "digging". Mailman was a lifetime member of the Greenwood Masonic Lodge, where he was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and York Rite Mason. He was Lutheran.

He was a son of the late Carl J. and Bertha Sasse Simpfenderfer and was the husband of the late Rose Zann Clamp Simpfenderfer. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Simpfenderfer and sisters, Hertha Myer and Violet Geifts.

Surviving is his daughter, Amy Simpfenderfer Carter (Edward) of Greenwood; grandchildren, Amber Carter and Alex Carter; sisters, Arlie Flath (Edward) of Roseburg, OR and Gertie Ladner (John) of Cornelian Bay, CA; a brother, George Simpfenderfer (Pat) of Acampo, CA; nephew and godson, Van Bowling Elliott, III of Charleston; nieces, Andrea Hilsman Glenn of Mt. Pleasant, Courtney Vanessa Feller of Greenwood.

Honorary escort will be Jeff Cannon, Edward Carter, Keith Swanson, Timmy Rushton, Joe Nalepa, Kinsey Brown, Glenn Readette, Van Elliott and Danny Baker, along with friends of The Fillin' Station and Lucky's.

The family is at the home, 209 Anchor Road, Greenwood.

It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials made to Hospice Care of South Carolina Pallative Foundation, 231 Hampton Avenue, Suite A, Greenwood, SC 29646 or to the Humane Society of Greenwood, PO Box 49776, Greenwood, SC 29649.
