Obituary

Dawn Shonesy, known and loved by many as “Sam,” passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 11, 2026, at the age of 79.

Born on February 11, 1947, in Anniston, Alabama, Dawn was the daughter of the late Lon Joseph Shonesy and Mary Frances Rahrer Gaines.

As the daughter of a Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army, she had the unique opportunity to live in Frankfurt, Germany, during her childhood – an experience she cherished and spoke of often throughout her life. She graduated from Anniston High School in 1966, where she proudly served as a cheerleader for the Anniston Bulldogs.

After graduation, Dawn made the bold move to Atlanta, Georgia, where she began building a life defined by independence, creativity, and determination. There, she married, welcomed her daughter, Britni, and went on to establish a successful career in publishing and creative marketing. She worked with dedication and passion until retiring at the age of 70.

Dawn had a remarkable eye for beauty and a natural talent for interior design, transforming any space she touched into something special. Her impeccable taste extended beyond the home to fashion, and she carried herself with a style that was distinctly her own. Her attention to detail was evident in everything she did, especially in the thoughtful gifts she gave. If you were lucky enough to receive one, you knew it came from the heart, and the wrapping alone was so beautiful it was hard to open- truly a work of art.

Above all, Dawn was a devoted mother. She was the most loving, giving, supportive, and selfless mother any child could ever have. She was a role model who embodied strength, independence, and perseverance. She gave her daughter unconditional, unwavering love and encouragement. That bond was at the center of her life.

Dawn found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved going to the movies, reading crime fiction thrillers and romantic suspense novels, and listening to music, especially when it gave her a chance to dance and show off her rhythm! She enjoyed spending time on her deck and her walks by the lake with her loved one Ken, and – it should go without saying – she adored her four-legged companions, whose place in her heart was immeasurable.

One of Dawn’s most cherished places was Mexico Beach, Florida. There, she could be found watching the sunset with her toes in the sand and a frozen margarita in hand, surrounded by her sister Faythe and those she loved most.

Dawn personified grace, beauty, class, strength, kindness, and humility. She was dedicated, hardworking, and compassionate, and her laughter was contagious. Simply put, she was the kindest, most beautiful soul – someone deeply loved, admired, and respected by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Britni Jordan (Stacy Alexander); her sister, Faythe Coker (Ken); her dear companion, Ken Knight; her nieces, Kiplan Blair Wood (Jeff) and Kayce McIntyre; her nephews, Corey McIntyre (Heather), Camron McIntyre, and Cade McIntyre; and her loving dog, Marlo.

Throughout her life, Dawn carried herself with a quiet, steady faith that guided her and gave her strength. May she now rest in the eternal peace of her Lord, forever surrounded by the love she so freely gave and reunited with those who have gone before her. Her light, her laughter, and her love will not be forgotten.

“Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot.”

Arrangements for a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later time.
