Richard "Dick" Carroll Copeland, Jr., 90, of 605 Olde Pucketts Ferry Road, Greenwood, husband of Bessie "Sissy" Susan Scott Copeland, died Sunday, December 17, 2023, at Regency Hospital of Greenville.
Born April 6, 1933, in Edenton, (Chowan County) NC, he was the elder son of the late Richard C. Copeland, Sr and Blannie Reece Byrum Copeland. Dick was a graduate of Belmont University, Nashville, Tennessee. He was a 32 degree mason and a member of the Scottish rite. Dick served in the NC National Guard, US Army and the US Air Force with assignments in Eniwetok Atoll and Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska. Mr. Copeland retired from the SC State government after serving 30 years with the SC Department of Social Services and the SC Department of Health and Human Services. He served as the Area 3 Administrator for the Division of Community Long Term Care for Greenwood, Laurens, Saluda, Edgefield, Abbeville and McCormick counties during the last 16 years. He was a member of Ninety Six First Baptist Church. Dick was a caring person and in his early years he was very active in visitation to the elderly and visiting the sick in the hospitals wherever he lived. He also loved to run 5K races and was an avid golfer where he was a former member of Star Fort Golf Course and several senior golf groups playing golf throughout the state.
He was preceded in death by his brother of Nashville, TN, Jesse Harold Copeland.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children; Faith Anne Copeland, of the home, Timothy Carroll Copeland (Lori) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Sarah Richey and Wayne Jackson (Magan), both of Greenwood; a step brother, Jimmy M. Baker (Lisa) of Edenton, NC; and grandchildren, Carolanne Richey, Mason Jackson, Wyatt Jackson, Caroline Harke (Spencer), and Parker E. Copeland (Emily); great grand children, Connor and Austin Harke; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Ninety Six First Baptist Church with the Reverend Chuck Sprouse and Reverend Michael How officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Wayne Jackson, Kyle Neal, Clay Stone, Rick Copeland, Neil Womack, and Parker Copeland.
The family will receive friends before the service at the church from 12:30-2pm.
