Dorothy Starnes Porter, 95, of 8201 Bronwood Road, Richmond, VA, widow of Marion Samuel Porter, died on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at her home.
Dorothy was a daughter of the late Abel and Minnie Kiser Starnes. She was born and raised in Blacksburg, SC and was educated at Lander College, Greenwood, SC, the University of South Carolina and Glassboro State College in New Jersey. She served in the US Navy during World War II and was a librarian with the Cherry Hill (NJ) Public Schools, the Catholic Diocese schools of Richmond, VA and the Richmond City Public School system.
Dorothy loved to read, especially novels and the Bible. She was always humble and giving to her family, willing to sacrifice anything to ensure their welfare.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John Daniel Porter and Patricia Murphy Porter of Gaithersburg, MD and David Allen Porter and Julie Jagonal Porter of Henrico, VA and her grandchildren, David Miguel Porter and Emely Porter.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, at Edgewood Cemetery, Greenwood, SC, with the Rev. Randy Ouzts officiating.
The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home, Greenwood, SC, on Saturday from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.
