Samuel Edward Stillwell, 92, of Wesley Commons, Greenwood, SC and formerly of North Augusta, beloved husband of Ada Summers Stillwell, died Sunday, February 7, 2010. Born in Edgefield County, SC, he was a son of the late Joseph Robert and Mattie Ethel Clark Stillwell. He was a graduate of Johnston High School and was a 1939 graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he was a three year Letterman in football and later received his Master�s degree in Education. Mr. Stillwell was an educator, having taught and coached all sports at Dillon High School from 1939 to 1945. He then moved to North Augusta, where he coached football, baseball and basketball, taught history and was principal of North Augusta High School. From 1951 through his retirement in 1977 he served as principal only. In 2005, he was awarded The Order of the Silver Crescent and in 2008, was inducted into the North Augusta Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Stillwell was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, North Augusta, where he served as a member of several church boards. He helped organize the Stillwell Sunday School Class and taught it for more than 50 years. He was currently a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, Greenwood. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Dee Gulledge and her husband, Max, of Irmo; a son, Rev. Robert E. Stillwell and his wife, Marian, of Anderson and grandchildren, John Edward Stillwell and Philip Adam Stillwell, both of Greenville, Joseph Welborn Stillwell of Charleston, and Annah Hiers and her husband, Michael, of Lugoff. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Hendrix Stillwell and Luther Earl Stillwell.
