Sue Franklin Bodie, 90, resident of NHC Laurens, widow of James Harold Bodie, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Born on August 6, 1935 in Saluda, she was a daughter of the late Milledge Bowman Franklin and Mattie Rodgers Franklin. Effie Sue Bodie proudly served as the self-appointed nursing home comedian and chief complainer; titles she wore with absolute honor. A woman of truly large personality, Effie Sue was a diva in every sense of the word. She refused to let age dictate her style; her hair, makeup, and clothes were always utterly perfect, and she consistently left people guessing her real age. When she wasn't keeping the staff and residents entertained (or on their toes), Effie Sue could be found enjoying her favorite food pairings: a bag of pork rinds, a bucket of KFC, and a cold glass of milk or a Mountain Dew. Underneath her glamorous exterior and sharp wit was a woman of deep faith, who cherished her community as a dedicated member of the Hodges Church of God.
She is survived by her children, Sheila Alexander, Terry Gregory (Janice), Wendell Gregory (Jane), and Susan Erskine (Charlie); step children, Beverly Benson (Rick), Belinda Bodie, and Karen Robinson (Ricky); sisters , Barbara Cowart and Sylvia Jordon; brother, James Johnson (Lynn); step sons, Jimmy Bodie and Randall Bodie (Jennie); grandchildren, Lerryn Grindell (Kevin), Dale Alexander (Emily), Terri Gregory (Jeremy Hix), Kathy Gregory (Dewayne Hughes), Robbie Gregory (Christie), Dwight Gregory (Melissa), Kirk Gregory, and Jessica Alsbrooks (Dusty); and step children, Laura Stewart, Chris Peterson, Stephen Wham, Shane Wham (Ashleigh), and Sherry Dunagan (Casey). Sue is also survived by 15 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Gregory and Roger Gregory; two sisters, Mary Hallman and Shirley Jordan; brother, Buddy Johnson; grandson, Roger Gregory; stepson, Richard Bodie; and great grandchild, Jayden Gregory.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends before the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, impeccable style, and unforgettable spirit.
