Eunice Bishop
Aiton
December 21, 1928 – May 23, 2026
Clemson University Samuel J. Cadden Chapel
2:00 - 3:00 pm (Eastern time)
Surrounded by members of her precious family, Eunice Bishop Aiton, beloved matriarch of a large, devoted family, met her Savior face-to-face on May 23, 2026 at the age of 97. She passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of the family she faithfully nurtured throughout her remarkable life.
Born on December 21, 1928, in Bamberg, South Carolina, Eunice was the youngest of six children born to Barney D. and Corrie Clayton Bishop. After losing her father at the age of six, she was raised in a close-knit Christian home whose faith, resilience, humility, and love shaped the woman she became.
A devoted Christian woman, Eunice began most days with the words, "This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it." Her faith guided every part of her life. She was gracious, kind, humble, and carried herself with the elegance and manners of a true Southern lady. She never complained, always treated others with dignity, and was respected and admired until her final day.
Eunice loved beauty and possessed a special gift for making every space warm and welcoming. Whether decorating a table, sewing, crafting, creating memory books, or preparing meals for family and church gatherings, she made ordinary moments feel extraordinary. Her Sunday family meals and church suppers became treasured traditions that drew generations together around her table.
Eunice was graduated from Bamberg High School, attended Lander College and received her BS degree in Business Management from Limestone College. While attending Lander, she met her beloved husband, Joseph E. Aiton. Together they built a home rooted in faith, friendship, hospitality, and enduring love. They also treasured lifelong friendships that enriched their lives through shared meals, church fellowship, travel, and decades of memories together.
Family and church were the center of Eunice's world. She faithfully served her church for decades through Sunday School, WMU, choir, Bible studies, and preparing meals for others. Her faith was evident not simply in words, but in the quiet way she lived each day.
Eunice was also a hardworking and accomplished professional who quietly broke barriers for women of her generation. She retired in 1991 after 29 years with Professional Medical Products (formerly Parke-Davis Co.) where she earned deep respect for her dedication and work ethic.
Eunice inspired her family through her unwavering love, creativity, quiet strength, and servant's heart. She was their encourager, advocate, prayer warrior, and safe place. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she created, the beauty she brought into everyday life, and the faith she modeled so faithfully.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph E. Aiton; her brothers, B.D. Bishop and Otis Bishop; and her sisters, Grace Johnson, Cleo Kearse, and Almena Wright.
She is survived by her children, JoAnn Schanen (Giles) of Clemson, South Carolina, and Joseph E. Aiton, Jr. (Phyllis) of Goldsboro, North Carolina; her grandchildren, Cindy Farach Carson (Dan) of Houston, Texas; Dr. Carolyn Schanen (Jeff Twiss) of Columbia, South Carolina; Patrick Schanen (Teri) of Atlanta, Georgia; Kathryn Schanen Kissam (Luke) of Charlotte, North Carolina; Tim Schanen of New York, New York; Jon Schanen (Amy) of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Giles Schanen, Jr. (Christine) of Clemson, South Carolina; Casey Cape (J.T.) of Holly Springs, North Carolina; and Kyle Aiton of Raleigh, North Carolina; along with seventeen great-grandchildren, devoted caregiver Marcela Mejia, who became beloved family, and many cherished extended family members and dear friends.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the medical team and caregivers who supported Eunice with compassion and dignity during her final years. The family would also like to acknowledge JoAnn Schanen, with whom Eunice lived for many years, for providing unwavering and loving care for her mother in her home.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 19, 2026 at the Clemson University Samuel J. Cadden Chapel.
Memorial donations in Eunice's honor may be made to Prisma Health Cottingham Hospice House of Seneca.
