Rev. Fred William Smith, 80, beloved husband of Brenda Parks Smith, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Woodruff, on October 20, 1938, he was the son of the late Toy E. and Maude Chesney Smith. Rev. Smith was a US Air Force veteran having served during the Vietnam War.
Fred was a graduate from Spartanburg Methodist College in 1967 and the Baptist College in Charleston in 1970, which is now Charleston Southern University. He later received a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest in 1975. Having been a pastor for thirty eight years, Rev. Smith served Providence Baptist Church, Monks Coroner; Buckeye Forest Baptist Church, Spartanburg; Mountain Grove Baptist Church, Louisburg; Shady Grove Baptist Church, Sunset; Nebo Baptist Church, Gresham; Coneross Baptist Church, Westminster; and retired from First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Greenwood, where he was made pastor Emeritus on December 28, 2003. He was a member of Laurel Baptist Church in Greenwood. One of his greatest joys of being a pastor was caring for people.
Rev. Smith leaves behind family and friends who loved and cared deeply for him. Surviving in addition to his wife of 57 years of the home are three daughters, Carolyn Alms of Greenwood, Christina Kelley and her husband, Bob of Sunset, SC and Susan Sheets and her husband, Jacob, of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Adam Sheets, Mark Sheets, Luke Sheets and Anna Sheets, all of Greenwood.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday at Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-8 pm.
