Obituary

Gerald Alvin Burton, 78, of 1606 Highway 246 South, husband of Jacquelyn "Jackie" Maddox Burton died, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at his home.

Born in Ware Shoals, he was a son of the late Inman and Annie Ruth Smith Burton. Gerald owned and operated Burton's Auto Body and Repair and he enjoyed refinishing old cars. He was on the committee of the Auto Body & Repair at the vocational school. He loved drag racing and ran many years at Ware Shoals Dragway, where he won many races including the first championship race held there. Gerald attended Callie Self Baptist Church for many years and at the age of 60 joined the church. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Faith Team Leader, Judgement House Counselor, and received pins for not missing Sunday School for seventeen years. Last year he became a member of Laurel Baptist Church and attended there until his health caused him to be confined to bed.

Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 60 years are his children, Gerald Burton (Barbara) of Hodges, Janice Crook (Roger) of Lexington, Malissa Green and Adonnis Ouzts (Gene), both of Greenwood; a sister, Marlene Smith of Anderson; a brother Billy Ray Burton (Annette) of Greenwood; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and Lucky Dog, who he loved dearly.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Laurel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be James Ouzts, Trevor Ouzts, Billy Hollingsworth, Sammy Hollingsworth, Dale Maddox, Ron Walworth, and J.W. Walker.

Honorary escort will be Billy Thigpen, John Akins, Jack Latham, Heyward Higgins, Billy Cockfield, Gerald Martin, Gary Burell, Jerry Mountz, and Jim Vaughn.

The family will receive friends before the service from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the church.
