Herbert Hoover Messer, 88, of 424 Roseland Avenue, widower of Evelyn Lillie Sheriff Messer, died Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Hospice House.
Born in Georgia, he was a son of the late Garland "W.G." and Emma Lunsford Messer. He was retired from Jarvis Cutting Tools and was a member of Coronaca Baptist Church.
He is survived by his children, James Curtis Townsend (Jan Alverson) and Robert Townsend (Bobbie), both of Hodges and Carolyn Odom (Larry) of Greenwood; a sister, Ethel Floyd of Greenwood; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mac Jones officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Shane Salters, Bryson Salters, Jason Sellers, Phillip Kemp, Dalton Stripling and Bill Sherrer.
Honorary escort will be Otis Gray and Clarence Young.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Family members are at their respective homes.
