Hewie Lawton Goff, 92, of 110 Dendy Street, Troy, husband of Evelyn Long Goff, died Friday, April 29, 2016 at Hospice House.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Callie Edgar and Bessie Elizabeth Warren Goff. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the LST 174. He had worked at the CCC Camp in Bradley, J. B. Carr's Biscuit Company in Greenwood, the Little Mountain Fire Tower and at Milliken in McCormick and retired from Neptune Measurement Company.
Hewie was one of the founders of the Troy Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid fisherman and a very humble, private man, who never boasted about his many accomplishments. He was a member of Troy United Methodist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class.
Surviving are his children, Sandra and Jimmy Peeler of Troy, Hewie E. "Eddie" Goff, Sharon and Bob Underwood, Randy and Cynthia Goff, all of Greenwood; a sister, Cleo G. Shuler of Lexington; grandchildren, Jamie and Deborah Peeler of Troy, Jodie Peeler of Newberry, Jarred and Abbey Goff of Maryland, Savannah Grace Goff, Destiney Goff, Matthew and Tish Goff, all of Greenwood, Tyler and Natalie Goff of Winston-Salem, NC, Kelsey Goff and Haley Brooke Goff, both of Columbia; great grandchildren, Emeline and Rachel Peeler, Nicolai, Nolan, Avenoa, Gabriel, Harper and Lawton Goff, Keagan, Kaleb and Thatcher Goff.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Barrett Alewine officiating.
The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.
