Obituary

Mary Jacquelyn "Jackie" Burton, 86, formerly of Greenwood, widow of Gerald Alvin Burton, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023.

Born in Greenwood, she was the daughter of the late Argus Holmes Maddox and Flossie Miller Maddox. Jackie dedicated herself to her family and career as a bookkeeper in the furniture sales for a remarkable span of twenty years. When not balancing books, she enjoyed pursuing her creative side, crafting beautiful dolls with meticulous care. Jackie shared many thrilling moments alongside her beloved husband, fondly racing a car referred to as "Shady Lady." She was married to Gerald for over 59 years.

A lifelong learner, Jackie had a deep love for literature and spent countless hours engrossed in the pages of her favorite books, she found joy in exploring the serene beauty of the mountains and was a former Girl Scout leader for numerous years. She was a member of Laurel Baptist Church where she was in the Women's Sunday school class and a former member of Callie Self Memorial Baptist Church, where she selflessly dedicated her time as a Sunday school teacher and participated in the yearly Judgement House productions.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Craig Maddox.

Surviving are her children, Janice Crook (Roger) of Lexington, Gerald Ray Burton (Barbara) of Hodges, Malissa Green, and Adonnis Ouzts (Eugene) both of Greenwood; grandchildren, Matthew Crook (Candice), April Burton, Argus Burton, Amanda Wright (J.C.), Christina Green (Brother), David Ouzts, Katie Guerry (Payne) and Adam Ouzts (Meg); fourteen great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 pm on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Laurel Baptist Church with the Rev. James Rodgers officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
