James Richard Hartley, 88, resident of Wesley Commons, beloved husband of Phyllis Herzog Hartley for nearly 69 years, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Born in Chicago, IL to the late Walter James and Lillian Radloff Hartley, he is survived by his wife and daughters, Pamela Richart and her husband, Lan, of Champaign, IL, Susan Frantz and her husband, Fred, of Huntley, IL and grandchildren, Michelle, Stephen, and Michael Balhan and Christie, Jon, and Sarah Richart, and eleven great grandchildren.
Known affectionally by his family and friends as "Jim," he was enormously proud of his family. He worked for over 20 years in the Chicago area as a regional sales manager and retired in 1995 to Carolina Shores, NC, where he served as a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Providence Home, an emergency teen shelter. He was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and worked as a "ranger" at one of North Carolina's prestigious golf courses.
His family and friends will greatly miss Jim, his outgoing personality, and eagerness to help anyone in need.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made "in memory of Jim" and sent to the Providence Home, P.O. Box 11042, Southport, NC 28461.
