Obituary

James H. McCarthy, Jr., "Poppy", 60, of 210 Frances Street, entered into eternal life with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Hospice House. Born in Greenwood on July 2, 1950, he was a son of the late James H. McCarthy, Sr. and Lila Mae Blackwell Davis McCarthy Dunlap. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and received certification in small engine repair from Piedmont Technical College. "Poppy", as he was known to his grandsons and close friends, retired from Winn Dixie after 30 years of service and worked with Coca-Cola Consolidated for ten years. He was a member of Ninety Six Pentecostal Holiness Church, served as Vice President of his Sunday School class and was President of the Men's Fellowship. He was Past Master, Master Mason of Mathews Lodge #358 A.F.M., from which he recently received his 25 year pin. Jim was the loving husband of Jamie Lowery McCarthy for 38 years and the proud father of his son, S. Craig McCarthy of Greenwood; his daughter, Kathryn McCarthy Ayers of McDonough, GA; two grandsons, Stephen Craig McCarthy, II and Alex Michael McCarthy of Atlanta, GA. He was first married to the late Donna Neal McCarthy of Ninety Six. Jim is also survived by two brothers, Jerry H. Davis and his wife, Linda, of Greenwood and Stanley Davis and his wife, Vicki, of Hodges; a most special cousin, Laura McCarthy Owings and her husband, Andy, of Ninety Six and several other cousins, nieces and nephews. In healthier years, Jim so enjoyed playing softball, racing and golfing. He never met a stranger and lived a life of great example, always giving the advice to always do the right thing in any situation. The family members are at their respective homes. They would like to express their sincere appreciation to everyone who so tirelessly and endlessly participated in Jim's care and the outpouring of endless love. We are so sincerely grateful. May God pour out His blessings on you.
