Joe Harold Martin, 80, of Greenwood, beloved husband of Nancy Killingsworth Martin, his wife of 57 years, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 22, 2017.
Born in Ware Shoals, he was a son of the late James Harold (Buddy) and Elma Clamp Martin. He was a graduate of Ware Shoals High School (1955) and Furman University (1959) and received a M.Ed. degree in 1965. He began his teaching career at Berea High School in Greenville, SC in 1960. He taught at Ware Shoals High School (1961-62) and was principal of Camak Elementary and Ware Shoals Junior High from 1963-1977. He taught at Northside Junior High, Southside Junior High, was assistant principal at Southside Junior High and East End Middle School from 1977-1990. He was employed at Emerald Center and Connie Maxwell Children's Home after retiring from the schools.
Joe served in the Army Reserve from 1959-1965 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1965. He served the First Baptist Church in Ware Shoals as deacon, assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and Training Union leader. He was a member of North Side Baptist Church since 1977, where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, and served on a number of committees.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, Mickey L. Martin (Carol) of Jacksonville, FL and Monty J. Martin (Lori) of Kings Mountain, NC; grandchildren, Andrew Martin and Magan Beattie; and great grandchildren, Benjamin Marcelleno, Alexa Marcelleno, Adalynn Martin and Ansley Martin.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Lethco officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Martin, Monty Martin, Andrew Martin, Nick Beattie, Joseph Mahon, and Tim Luker.
Honorary escort will be members of Good News Samaritan Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
