Obituary

The Reverend John Gerald Hipp, 96, resident of Wesley Commons, husband of Carol McDaniel Hipp, died Monday, September 19, 2011 at Hospice House. Born in Saluda, he was a son of the late Holley Haskell and Rosa Belle Shaw Hipp. He was a graduate of Saluda High School and Newberry College and received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Georgia. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe as an Army Chaplain. He was a former member of the Lion�s Club, the Masons, Alston Wilkes Society, County Mental Health Association, Council on Aging, Faith Home, AARP and Habitat for Humanity. Rev. Hipp was licensed to preach in 1938 through the SC United Methodist Conference and served the following appointments: Cross Anchor, 1940; Pickens (Grace & Mt. Bethel), 1943; Latimer Memorial, 1946; Startex, 1948; St. John (Graniteville), 1952; Providence, 1956; Mt. Bethel, 1960; Central, 1962; Platt Springs, 1966; Mathews, 1971; Edgefield, 1975 and O�Neal Street, 1978. Following his retirement in 1980, he continued to serve with appointments to Trenton & McKendree, 1982; Waterloo & Soule Chapel, 1984 and Galloway, 1986. He served on numerous district and conference committees and boards throughout his career. Rev. Hipp was a member of Mathews United Methodist Church, where he was a former member of the United Methodist Men. Surviving is his wife of 69 years and his sister, Virginia H. Goff of Saluda. He was preceded in death by his son, John Gerald Hipp, Jr.
