His brother, Paul, resides in Pittsburgh, PA and his brother, Joseph, who preceded him in death, resided in Hermitage, PA. His two sisters, Ann and Margaret, live in Forest Hills, PA. John attended Bradford Area Public Schools and was a 1955 graduate of Bradford High School. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army and, after basic training, he served at Fort Sill, OK. After his discharge from the Army, he attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, where he graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. On April 1, 1967, John married Grace Maxson in Shinglehouse, PA. After their marriage, John and Grace lived in the Pittsburgh area and he was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation, where he became Purchasing Manager for the Circuit Breaker Division. In 1985, they moved their family to Greenwood with Westinghouse. When the plant was acquired by Eaton Corporation, John continued to work in the same position until his retirement in 1997. After retirement, John continued to act as Senior Materials Consultant at the Cutler Hammer Division of Eaton. During his years in Greenwood, John was active in both his church and the community. John served as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Lourdes and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1987, John was the first Economic Ambassador for Greenwood County as a result of his involvement and influence in bringing six companies into Greenwood County. Eventually, the SC Department of Commerce adopted the program statewide and John was designated the SC Ambassador for Economic Development by Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. in 1988. John and Grace have three children, Mark (Cindy), Matthew (Mollie), and Jennifer (Jeff Brock). All of them graduated from Greenwood High School and each of them have pursued further education and training. John was the proud grandfather of Mark and Cindys two children, Jonathon and Brooke, and Jennifer and Jeffrey Brocks two children, H. Maxson and Genevieve. Last November, John proudly witnessed the wedding of his son, Matthew, to Mollie Watts in Mountville, SC.
