John Earl Vickers, 83, of Greenwood, husband of Patricia Brannon Vickers, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born on April 2, 1943 in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late George Junie Vickers and Lillie Kate McDaniel Vickers. Johnny proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. As a submariner, he navigated the depths of the ocean aboard the USS Triton, embodying the courage and dedication of his generation.
Johnny pursued his education and graduated from North Greenville Junior College. He then channeled his work ethic and love for people into what would become a cornerstone of the local community. For 50 remarkable years, Johnny was the owner and operator of Johnny's Cheeseburger House in Ninety Six, which was established on January 18, 1971. More than just a restaurant, it was a gathering place where John served up smiles, warmth, and fellowship alongside great food. His presence behind the counter defined a half-century of local history.
He was a member of the Ninety Six First Baptist Church, where he drew strength from his relationship with God and cherished the community of his fellow believers.
When he wasn't serving his country, his church, or his customers, Johnny could almost always be found on the golf course. An avid golfer, he spent some of his happiest hours chasing the perfect swing, enjoying the outdoors, and sharing laughs with friends on the green.
In addition to his wife, Patricia, he is survived by his children, Rev. Marcus Vickers (Christina) and Tina Vickers Cook (Richard); sister, Jorene McCutcheon; grandchildren, Trey Cook (Jami), Grace Cook, John Cook, William Vickers, Ainsley Vickers, and Micah Vickers; and great grandson, Bruce Cook.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Osier, Charles, Mack, and Dean Vickers.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Ninety Six First Baptist Church with the Rev. Chuck Sprouse officiating.
The family will receive friends before the service from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the church.
