Judith Fortner Ayers, 78, widow of Rev. Robert Arthur Ayers, passed away on December 22, 2025, at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born on March 6, 1947, in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Dr. J. B. Fortner and Bessie Amozine Fox Fortner. Judy dedicated her life to teaching, inspiring countless students throughout her career in public education.

Judy's educational journey began at Lee University in Cleveland, TN, where her passion for teaching flourished. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Education from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. As a dedicated teacher, she influenced many lives while teaching at East End and Brewer Elementary Schools, and she enjoyed a fulfilling career that culminated in her retirement from Centerville Elementary School in Anderson. Judy had a special knack for fostering self-esteem and curiosity in her students, always striving to make a lasting impact on their lives.

Beyond her professional life, Judy was a pillar of her faith community. She devoted many years to the Church of God ministry, serving alongside her husband at various locations including Woodruff, Laurens, Durst Avenue, and finally, Pendleton Church of God. Her biggest passion was her faith, and she poured her heart into helping those around her.

Judy is survived by her son, Jason Ayers; her sister, Sandra Staggs and her nephew, Ron Staggs.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Deryk Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Ninety Six.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Agner, Ron Staggs, Michael Hallman, Travis Hallman, Brad Boozer, Burl Davis, Keith McIntosh, Randy Harvley, Roy Owen, Benny McKee and Dan Wooten.

Though Judy lost her battle with cancer, she won the battle of life. She exemplified the true spirit of resilience and faith, as reflected in 2 Timothy 4:7. Her unwavering commitment to her family and her community will resonate in the lives she has touched, reminding all of us to continue to grow, learn, and never cease in our quest to help others find love and faith.
