Karen Johnston Kiappes, 71, of Houston, TX, wife of John Leon Kiappes, passed away Monday, November 11, 2024 in Greenwood, SC.
Born in Houston, TX, she was a daughter of the late Edward Knauff Johnston and Julia Ann Morgan Johnston.
Karen was a graduate of the University of Texas and dedicated her early years to shaping young minds as a special education teacher at Spring Branch Independent School District. Once she began her own family, Karen wholeheartedly embraced the role of full-time mother, nurturing her loved ones with boundless care and devotion. Karen's nurturing spirit extended beyond her family as she immersed herself in volunteer work within her local schools. For over 19 years, she played a pivotal role in the PTA, holding various leadership positions and making a lasting impact on the educational community. Karen was also committed to the Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations, serving as den mother and troop leader. Her dedication inspired her children to have successful scout careers.
Her dedication to serving others was also evident in her membership at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Houston, where her faith guided her life and relationships.
Karen is survived by her husband; her children, John Leon "J.L." Kiappes, Jr., Anna Theodora Kiappes and Edward William Kiappes; sisters, Judy Rodgers (Tom) and Catherine Linton (Robert); a special cousin, Burt Jones; sisters-in-law, Mercene Kiappes Smith (Tom) and Theresa Kiappes Phillips (Richard); and her nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Johnston.
Services will be held on Wednesday, November 20 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Houston. Further details will be included when finalized.
