Obituary

L. Ruple Harley, Sr., 94, widower of Billie Davis Harley, died Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at his home.

Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late Irvin S. and Fannie Olivia Ruple Harley. He was a graduate of Wofford College and the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science.

Mr. Harley founded Harley Funeral Home in 1947, serving the Greenwood and surrounding communities with dignity and compassion for many years until he was forced to slow down due to declining health. His passion for service to others was instilled in his son and grandson, who continue his legacy today as second and third generation funeral directors, operating the family business. He served as past president of the SC State Board of Funeral Service and the SC Funeral Directors Association. He served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theatre and, after the war, continued his service in the Army Reserves, retiring as a major. He was a member of the American Legion Post 20, Forty and Eight, the Retired Officers Association and the V.F.W. He was a member of the Greenwood Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Lodge 91 A.F.M. and was a Hejaz Shriner, serving as past president of the Hejaz Temple. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving is a son, L. Ruple Harley, Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Ninety Six; grandchildren, L. Ruple Harley, III and his wife, Carol, of Ninety Six, Allison Harley Cobb and her husband, Michael, of Alpharetta, GA and Aaron Counts and his wife, Amanda, of Hermitage, TN; great grandchildren, Davis Renee Harley of Myrtle Beach, Ben Harley of Ninety Six, Kerri Jones of Greenwood, Hampton Cobb, Davis Cobb and AliGrace Cobb, all of Alpharetta, GA and a sister, Frances H. Brown of Manning.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, he was also preceded in death by a son, Henry Clifton Harley, II and eleven of his twelve siblings.

Sincere appreciation is extended to the angels who have so lovingly cared for Mr. Harley over the past year: Doretta Sprowl, Lillie Sprowl, Arlene Morgan, and, just recently, Shirley Jones.
