Obituary

Reverend Larry Gene Smith, 72, of Greenwood, husband of Libby Smith, passed away Monday, June 10, 2024, just shy of his 73rd birthday.

Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Harper Eugene Smith and Gloria Carmen Wood Cobb. Larry was a graduate of Greenwood High School Class of 1969 and went on to attend Lander University and Clemson University.

He chose to devote his life to the service of the Lord, eventually becoming the esteemed Pastor of the New Life Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he ministered to and inspired many souls. Throughout his life, Larry's unwavering faith and dedication shone brightly, as he shepherded congregations at Amick Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church and Saluda First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf at Star Fort Golf Club; cheering on his Clemson Tigers; and the sounds of nature while fishing.

His role as a father was cherished deeply, and his pride soared as a "papa" to his treasured grandchildren. Above all, the love and companionship he shared with his wife, Libby, remained the cornerstone of his existence.

In addition to his wife, Libby of the home, he is survived by his children, Sherrie Elizabeth Matthews (Michael), Buffie Bain (Smokey), both of Greenwood, and Derrick Smith (Stephanie) of Lancaster; sister, Denise Schumacher of Greenwood; brother, Nathan Smith (Sharon) of Greenwood; grandchildren, Allen Matthews, Kayla Matthews, Ansley Freeman (T.J.), Andrew Smith, Luke Smith; great granddaughter, Kayleigh Galloway; stepmother, Carmen Smith; stepfather, Larry Cobb; stepsisters, Betty Colon and Lisa Maldonado; and stepbrother, Johnny Maldonado (Kim).

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Ninety Six Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. H. Sherrill Green, Bishop Ray Boggs, Rev. Darren Frye, Rev. Brian Brock, and Senator Billy Garrett officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Derrick Smith, Michael Matthews, Allen Matthews, Smokey Bain, Randall Jay, Matt Maroney, and Darren Frye.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Harley Funeral Home.
