Lester �Les� James Spry, Jr., 85, of 413 Fairforest Drive, husband of Kathryn Ruckman Spry, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at his home. Born in Elkhart, IN, he was a son of the late Lester James Spry, Sr. and Violet M. Hartranft Spry. At the age of 17, Les, joined the U. S. Navy and served during WWII, and in the South Pacific Theater of Operations where he witnessed the testing of the Atom Bomb on the Bikini Atoll. He was a retired policeman from Elkhart, Indiana and a member of the American Legion Post 20 in Greenwood. Les was a former member of Chappells Baptist Church where he was a deacon and was a member of Grace Community Church as of 2008. He was preceded in death by a sister, Leah Smith and a brother, Donald Spry. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are three sons, James M. Spry and his wife, Sabrina, of Inman, SC, David Welch and his wife, Dawn, of Sioux City, SD and Michael Welch and his wife, Allison, of Dallas, TX; two daughters, Jane Reda and her husband, Frank, of Montgomery, AL and Judy Harrison of CA; a sister, Vera Simons of Elkhart, IN; two brothers, John Spry and his wife Ethel, of Escanaba, MI and Tom Spry and his wife, Cathy, of Elkhart, IN; seven grandchildren: Tanner Spry and his wife Karen, Jeff Spry, Kayla Spry, Sarah Nicolle, Timothy Harrison and his wife, Brittney, Corey Harrison and his wife, Erica, and Gregory J. Harrison and his wife, Abir; ten great grandchildren and one on the way in September. Honorary escort will be the members of the American Legion Post 20.
