Lexie Daniel Walters, better known as Lex Walters, died Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Walters grew up on a farm in the Buford Community of Lancaster, SC. He was the twelfth child of William Vander and Flossie Hinson Walters. Like others in his family, Lex Walters received his higher education at Clemson University, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering, completed coursework for a Master's degree in Business Administration, and received the Ph.D. in Engineering Management.

While at Clemson, he met his future wife, Rosemary Stairley Farr of Greer, SC. The Walters' have two children, Lexie Daniel Walters, Jr. and Sharon Leigh Walters, and six grandchildren: Mariam Walters, Bevan Walters, Benjamin Walters, Lexie Walters and Trevor Walters of Summerfield, NC and Jayme Correia of Greenwood, SC. The Walters also have two foster grandchildren, Chris Cantrell and Julian Asselle of Greenwood, SC. Also surviving is a brother, Eustace H. Walters of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his parents and ten brothers and sisters.

In 1968, Dr. Walters was named President of Piedmont Technical College and served in this role until his retirement in 2008. He took great pride in seeing the services of the college grow from an enrollment of about 175 students in 1968 to an enrollment of over 6,000 credit students when he retired.

Upon retirement, he was presented the "Order of the Palmetto", the state's highest honor from the Governor of his home state.

In 1988, Lex and Rosemary also established The Heritage Company of Greenwood, Inc.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at The James Medford Family Event Center on Piedmont Technical College's campus with Dr. Jim Hudgins and General Charles E. Fox, Jr. officiating. A family entombment will be held at 4:30 pm in Oakbrook Memorial Park Mausoleum, 3007 Highway 25 N, Hodges, SC.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Medford Center.

The family's request is that flowers be omitted and memorials made to The Piedmont Technical College Foundation, PO Box 1467, Greenwood, SC 29648.
