Lonnie Maxie McManus, Jr., 87, of Greenwood, SC, entered into Heavenly rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday August 1, 2026, following a long and heartbreaking battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Greenwood, on September 17, 1938, he was the son of the late Rev. Maxie and Jessie Bowick McManus. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School, Greenwood College of Commerce, and an Honor Graduate of the U.S. Army Advanced NCO School for Reserve Components.

Lonnie retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections where he served as a Captain at the Leath Correctional Facility, receiving the Corrections Officer Supervisor of the Year Award for 2002. In the earlier years of his career, he worked as a logistics and credit manager for Rhodes Furniture.

He proudly served in the South Carolina Army National Guard, where he retired as a Master Sergeant after 32 years of dedicated service in Company D, 111th Signal Battalion in Greenwood. Lonnie was devoted to his country, his community, and his churches, having served as a Sunday School teacher, an auxiliary Sheriff’s Deputy, P.T.A. President, and in multiple officer positions in the Loyal Order of Moose, where he was an awarded orator and proudly supported the organization’s national children’s home and school among its other charitable causes.

Lonnie was a faithful member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and greeter prior to the onset of his illness. Other churches with special ties to his Christian journey included Boiling Springs First Baptist, where he loved to worship despite his early-stage memory challenges while residing in Spartanburg; St. Mark and Mt. Carmel Methodist Churches in Greenwood; and his childhood and ancestral family church, Friendship Pentecostal Holiness in Greenwood. His faith and trust in Jesus Christ sustained him through his long and difficult battle with Alzheimer’s.

In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his faithful and devoted wife of 54 years, Joyce Cannon McManus; his loving sister, Dot McManus Whatley of Cayce; a brother-in-law, Donald Cannon; and a niece, Kim Moon.

Surviving are his children son; Glen McManus (Brenda) of Inman; a daughter, Patricia McManus of Greenwood; and son Chuck McManus (Tanya) of Spartanburg; two granddaughters, Teresa McManus (Kevin), and Christina Rowe (Stephen); a brother-in-law, J.B. Whatley; two sisters-in-law, Dot Moon (Richard), and Norma Cannon; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday, August 7, 2026 at Friendship Pentecostal Holliness Church with the Rev. Randy Ouzts and the Rev. Chuck McManus officiating. 9602 Hwy 178 Saluda, 29138 South Carolina in Greenwood County.

Interment with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 AM until 11:45 PM

Honorary Pallbearers: Mike Maffett, Ronnie Culbreath, Ricky Moon, and retired members of Company D, 111th Signal Battalion of the South Carolina Army National Guard, and the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
