Obituary

Mary Berry Black, 93, formerly of Greenwood, widow of James Fletcher Black, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, at Saluda Nursing Center.

She was born on August 15, 1932, in Saluda County, she was the daughter of the late Curtis George Berry and Vara Whittle Berry. Mary was a graduate of Saluda High School and retired from Greenwood Mills. She took great pleasure in baking cakes for family and friends, creating delicious treats that brought joy to celebrations and comfort during difficult times. Mary was a member of Abney Memorial Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher for over 50 years, a member of WMU and in the Tabitha Sunday school class.

She was predeceased by a son, James Dean Black; and her brothers Dawson Berry, Wilmont Berry, and Lamar Berry.

She is survived by her son, Craig Black (Beverly), and daughter, Melanie Jester (James Jr.); a brother, Earl Berry; sister-in-law, Mary Berry; grandchildren, Dustin Yates (Kari Hillman), Victoria Perkins (Lane) and Ellington Jester; and great-grandchildren, Jeffery Yates, Rylee Yates, Wyatt Yates, Jason Hillman, Olivia Perkins and Tahlia Perkins.

Services will be held at 2:00 pm on August 1, 2026, at Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bryant Sims and Rev. Dr. Alan Kinsey officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends before the service at the funeral home from 1:00 -2:00 pm.
