Obituary

Mary Amanda Whelchel Reid, 92, of Greenwood, widow of Rev. Paul Calvin Reid, passed away Monday, August 18, 2026, at her home.

Born in Gaffney, SC, on August 30, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Napolean Whelchel and Grace Lovelace Whelchel.

Mary received an associate degree in business from Robinson Business College and enjoyed a long and dedicated professional career. She served as office secretary at Schlumberger for 27½ years and later as a receptionist at Countybank for 4½ years. She was also a former member and officer of IAAP.

A devoted preacher’s wife, Mary faithfully served alongside her husband, the Rev. Paul Reid, throughout their many years of ministry. Together, they served as home missionaries and founded First Free Will Baptist Church in Greenwood, where Mary taught Sunday school and shared her musical gifts by playing the piano and organ. Through the years, they also served Beaver Dam Free Will Baptist Church in Greer, South Avenue Free Will Baptist Church in Lancaster, West Side Free Will Baptist Church in Johnsonville, and  Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church in Bratt, Florida.

Mary was deeply involved in Women Active for Christ Ministries at both the local and state levels. Over the years, she served as treasurer locally and statewide, as well as president at the local level. Her faithful service reflected the love she had for her church and her desire to share the love of Christ with others.

In her quieter moments, Mary enjoyed tending to her plants and working in her garden. She also looked forward to her cherished Saturday ritual of stopping by Bojangles for a country ham biscuit before going to get her hair done. Some traditions were simply too important to miss!

Mary had a deep and abiding love for her family, and her son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were truly the light of her life. Above all else, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and devoted her life to serving Him, her family, and others.

She is survived by her son, Paul "David" Reid (Leilani); sister, Millie Phifer; grandchildren, Maria Amanda Reid-McGill (Robert) and Hannah Reid Collins (Cody); and great grandchildren, Jackson Ray Collins, Archer Luc McGill, and Lucy Catherine Collins.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at First Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Nabors, Rev. Donald Davis, and Rev. Bob Woodyard officiating. Committal will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Parris and Rev. Matthew Woodyard officiating.

Pallbearers will be Noah Woodyard, Walter Jones, Walter Breuer, Steve Graeber, Robert McGill, and Cody Collins.

Honorary escort will be Ronnie Sherman and members of the Senior Adult Sunday School class.

The family will receive friends before the service from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to First Free Will Baptist Church, 1510 E. Durst Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649.
