Obituary

Matthew Adam Ashley, known affectionately to those who loved him as "Big Mo," 34, of Greenwood, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, at his home.

Born on September 29, 1991 in Anderson, SC he was a son of Mark Anthony Ashley, Sr. and Mona Burdette Ashley. Matthew was a remarkable man whose kind-hearted nature and humble spirit touched the lives of many.

He graduated from Belton Honea Path High School, where his talents on the football field quickly became apparent. As an offensive lineman, he was noted not only for his physical prowess but for being, as one coach described, “the glue that held his offensive line together.” This was no small praise; it reflected Matthew’s unwavering commitment and teamwork. His passion for football continued through his years at Coastal Carolina University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science while standing as a three-year starter on the offensive line. Matthew also enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, though his greatest love was always football.

Matthew’s career path led him to become a night shift supervisor at Cardinal Health, where his reliability and dedication made a meaningful difference every day. Those who worked alongside him remember him as both big in stature and big in heart.

Outside of work and sports, Matthew found joy in simple, yet meaningful activities. He loved fishing, finding peace and happiness by the water. He also enjoyed spending time at his family’s land, where shooting guns was a favorite way to relax and connect with nature. Gaming was another source of enjoyment, giving him moments of fun and peace.

In addition to his parents, Mark and Mona, he is survived by his brother, Anthony Ashley and his wife, Melody; niece, Aria; numerous aunts and uncles; and friends, Will and Josh along with many others.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with Andrew Jenkins officiating.

The family will receive friends before the service from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family ask for everyone to wear BHP or Coastal Carolina colors to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital (www.donate.shrinerschildrens.org).

Matthew’s story is one punctuated by the love he gave freely, the communities he uplifted, and the passions that brought him joy. Big Mo’s spirit remains, a profound presence etched in the hearts of those who knew him—a gentle giant whose legacy is sewn with kindness, courage, and an enduring love for family and life.
