Obituary

Michael Devrone Whitfield, 71, husband of Karen Brooks Biggart Whitfield, died Friday, April 4, 2025 at his home.

Born in Augusta, GA, Michael was a son of the late Calvin Rudy and Annie Louise Prather Whitfield. He retired from Air Tech, where he worked as an HVAC technician. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam era, embodying the dedication and spirit of a true patriot. When he wasn't working, you could find him painting, woodworking, or practicing his woodburning skills. He had a knack for making beautiful things from raw materials, and anyone who saw his work would agree he had a special touch.

One of his greatest passions was traveling, with Scotland holding a special place in his heart. Michael loved to explore new places, seek adventure through scuba diving, and hit the open road on his motorcycle. Whether it was snow skiing down a mountain or enjoying time with family and friends, he embraced every moment with joy.

Michael was a deeply Christian man who loved Jesus and his church, The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.

Michael is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Michael D. Whitfield, II, Crystal Baxter, Roy Kurowski and Bryan Biggart; sisters, Sue Austin (Hoyt), Shelia Stewart (Doug), Sherry Howell (David) and Debbie Martin (Ronnie); brother, Jerry Whitfield (Tammy); sisters-in-law, Wanda Whitfield and Sheri Whitfield; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bertha Whitfield; son, Sean Biggart; sister, Phyllis Ash and brothers, Kenny Whitfield, Rudy Whitfield and Jeff Whitfield.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection with the Rev. Mary Balfour Dunlap officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Ninety Six.
The family will receive friends at the church in Emmaus Hall on Wednesday from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

It is requested that flowers be omitted and memorials made to The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, PO Box 3283, Greenwood, SC 29648 (episcopalgreenwood.org).
