Obituary

With profound sadness and a heavy heart, we announce that Carl Mitchell "Mike" Shelton, Jr. was called home to be with his Lord January 23, 2025, after a brief illness.

Born December 27, 1940, in Columbia, S.C., Mike was the son of the late Carl and Helen Shelton. A devoted husband, an incredible father and loyal friend, he touched many lives and will be deeply missed and always remembered with a smile.

In 1968, Mike married the love of his life and best friend, Jean Shelton. They were inseparable for the next 48 years and had a love they both agreed would last "forever and a day." During their time together, they raised four children — Ralph Banks, Jr., Shelby Duensing, Cathy Gillespy and Michael Shelton — and provided a wonderful, loving home that would serve as an example for their children and grandchildren.
Mike graduated from Columbia High School in 1958, and after serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years, graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1966. Over the course of his professional career, Mike worked as an accountant in both the public and private sectors, retiring in 2004 from the S.C. Budget and Control Board. After his retirement, Mike and Jean were able to enjoy traveling together and spending time with family and friends until her passing in 2016. Mike was a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ and a longtime member of Northside Baptist Church. He also volunteered at Prisma Health Children's Hospital and took great joy in helping those in need and bringing a smile to those he served. When not volunteering, Mike loved playing golf with his friends and was a member at Fort Jackson Golf Club. Sadly he was never able to master those short putts.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents (Carl and Helen), sister (Virginia Chambers), wife (Jean), and one son (Ralph).

Surviving are his children, Shelby Duensing (Jim), Cathy Gillespy (John), Michael Shelton (Kate); daughter-in-law, Janie Banks; nieces Debbi Mattox, Jennifer Chambers, Ashley Chambers and Maggie Saunders; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 10-11 a.m. at Harley Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Greenwood Shores Baptist Church Cemetery, 318 Island Ford Road, Ninety Six, SC.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of your choice will be appreciated.
