Mildred Lewis Upton, 92, of Greenwood, SC, widow of Theodore Jack Upton passed away early Wednesday morning, July 12, 2023, at NHC of Bluffton.

Mildred was born May 2, 1931, in Spartanburg County, the second of five children of the late Henry H. and Viola Barnett Lewis. She married Jack Upton in 1949, and they had a child, Lerryn Upton Crocker.
Mildred worked most of her career as a technical librarian, serving most of those years as an employee of the Monsanto Corporation. After retiring, she devoted her leisure time to the hobby of golf. An avid reader and passionate supporter of literacy, she volunteered for the Literacy Council of Greenwood for a number of years. Mildred also enjoyed the beach and hosted many such trips with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Lewis Burgess and a brother, Donald Lewis.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law Lerryn and Joe Crocker of Saint Helena Island, SC; two grandchildren, Hayes Culbertson (Sherry Minche) of Honea Path and Ginny Crocker Purdee (Matt) of Savannah, GA; a sister, Frances Welch; and brother Ray Lewis (Linda), both of Rock Hill. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews who have played an important part of her life and in whose lives she enjoyed participating.

Mildred's life will be celebrated at 1pm on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Harley Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends before the service from 11 am-1:00pm.
