Obituary

Nina Mobley Downey, 88, Widow of Paul Silas Downey, of Greenwood, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Hospice of the Piedmont.

Born on January 16, 1938 in Macclenny, Florida, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur Lacey Mobley and Fleta Pauline Grooms.

Nina was a passionate sewer and quilt maker, she crafted beautiful quilts. She made clothes for all her children when they were young, each garment cut from the same pattern, but unique to each child, be it shirts, rompers, or dresses. Nina loved her loyal companion, Bo, a loving dog who passed just one day before her, a testament to their unbreakable bond.

Her zest for life was unmistakable. Nina was known for her love of adventure and outgoing personality, whether traveling to visit family in Florida or simply venturing down the road to enjoy a meal and greet friends. A true social butterfly, she embraced every opportunity to engage and brighten the lives of those around her. Nina lived by the enduring motto, “She thought she could, so she did,” embodying determination and resourcefulness. When her daughter was abroad for a few months, Nina didn’t hesitate to transform her daughter’s room into a bathroom, continually reimagining and rearranging her surroundings to bring new life and function to every space.

Nina was a founding member of Emerald Baptist Church, where she was deeply involved and beloved. She faithfully attended the Sunshinners Sunday school class and was a proud participant in the Red Hat Society, fostering friendships and community at every stage of her life.

Above all, Nina’s heart was devoted to her family. She doted on her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, nurturing a legacy of love and warmth that will carry on through generations.

She is survived by her daughters Pam D. Young (Ricky), and Nancy Wolfe (Alan); son, David Downey (Viola); sisters, Jewel Becham, Ernestine Underhill, Joanna Dotson, and Janice Kerce; as well as her 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; special nieces, Gail Calloway, and Linda Richardson.

Downey, and Dennis Downey and Jeff Downey; sisters,Eunice Caldwell and Lucille Rollerson; brothers, Fulton Mobley, Edward Mobley, Phillip Mobley ; son in law, Wes Taylor; granddaughter, Nina Bates, and great-grandson Alex Bates.
